UN for Men Too

UN for Men Too ยท the plain questions

UN Women exists. What would UN Men have to be?

The comparison people reach for is between two organisations. Only one of them is an organisation. This is what sits on each side, line by line, with the document behind every figure.

What is the difference between UN Women and a UN for men?

One exists. UN Women was created by General Assembly resolution A/RES/64/289 in 2010, with a budget, an executive board and reporting obligations. There is no counterpart entity for men and boys, so the comparison is between an institution and an absence.

A UN entity is a specific thing: a founding resolution, an executive board, an assessed or voluntary budget, a reporting line to the General Assembly, and a mandate naming its subject. UN Women has all five. For men and boys there is a 2004 acknowledgement addressed to the whole system and none of the five.

Is there a male equivalent of CEDAW?

No. CEDAW is a treaty on discrimination against women with a monitoring committee and state reporting. No treaty addresses discrimination against men or boys, and no committee monitors it.

General human rights treaties cover everyone, including men, and this campaign does not claim otherwise. What CEDAW adds is machinery: periodic reports, a committee, concluding observations and a public record over time. That machinery is what has no counterpart.

Is there a men's equivalent of the Commission on the Status of Women?

No. The Commission on the Status of Women meets annually and produces agreed conclusions. There is no standing commission whose subject is men and boys.

The Commission did address men once, in 2004, when it adopted agreed conclusions on the role of men and boys in achieving gender equality. Those conclusions acknowledged that men and boys sometimes face discriminatory barriers and practices. They were reviewed once, in 2007, and assigned to nobody.

Are there UN observance days for men?

No. There are 13 UN observance days for women and girls. International Men's Day on 19 November is not a UN observance and carries no General Assembly resolution.

Every one of the 13 women-and-girls observances rests on a resolution. International Men's Day is marked widely and by some UN offices, but it has never been adopted by the General Assembly, which is the step that makes a day a UN day.

Are men and boys named in the Sustainable Development Goals?

Not as a group falling behind. Goal 5 is on gender equality and is framed around women and girls. Searching the 234 indicators of the global framework finds no mention of father or paternity.

Several indicators are disaggregated by sex, which means male outcomes can be read off them, and this page does not pretend otherwise. What is absent is a target or indicator whose object is a male outcome, and the machinery that follows from having one.

Are there more men than women working at the UN?

No, not in professional posts. Women reached 50.4 per cent of Professional and higher categories across the UN system in 2025, and senior management has been at parity since 2018.

The staffing objection is the only one here that can be tested against a published number, and it fails its own test. The count of entities and indicators for men and boys was zero when women were 39.7 per cent of those posts in 2004, and it is zero now.
